Overview

The Kumaon Walking Trail — Heritage Homes, Quiet Trails, Timeless Hills

Walk slowly. Stay beautifully. Let the hills do the rest.

Some journeys are measured not in kilometres but in the quality of silence between footsteps. This is one of them. The Kumaon Walking Trail takes you through five of the region's most graceful settings — Hartola, Binsar, Gaunap, Jageshwar, and Ganghet on easy scenic trails that connect restored heritage homes, living villages, and ancient temple grounds.

This is premium slow travel at its most considered. Walk through sanctuary forests and terraced farmland. Linger over home-cooked Kumaoni meals in family-run homestays. Stand at a village temple as the first light catches the snow line. Visit Jageshwar Dham, one of the Himalaya's most revered clusters of ancient stone temples, in the quiet shade of centuries-old deodars.

No large groups. No rushed transfers. Just a small circle of travellers, heritage stays with character, and the kind of walking that leaves you rested rather than tired.

Day 1: Arrive in Kumaon · Drive to Hartola

Arrive at Pantnagar Airport or Kathgodam Railway Station, where our team will receive you before we begin a scenic drive into the Kumaon Himalayas. As the plains gradually give way to winding mountain roads, you'll pass through forests, orchards and charming hill villages, offering your first glimpse of this beautiful region.
By afternoon, arrive at your beautifully restored heritage property in the peaceful village of Hartola. Surrounded by pine forests, fruit orchards and sweeping Himalayan views, it is the perfect place to slow down and settle into the rhythm of the mountains. If time permits, enjoy a gentle guided walk through the nearby forest before returning for evening tea and a delicious home-cooked Kumaoni dinner. Overnight stay in a homestay.

Drive: 4–5 hours from Pantnagar / Kathgodam

Day 2: Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary to Gaunap

After breakfast, drive to the entrance of Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, one of Kumaon's finest protected forests, known for its rich biodiversity and spectacular Himalayan panoramas. After completing the sanctuary formalities, begin a leisurely downhill walk along an old forest trail that winds through majestic oak, rhododendron and pine forests.
As the trail descends, dense woodland gradually gives way to terraced fields, traditional Kumaoni villages and quiet mountain landscapes. Along the way, enjoy beautiful ridgeline views and experience the slow pace of life in the hills. By afternoon, arrive at the heritage village of Gaunap and settle into your charming homestay, where warm hospitality and freshly prepared local cuisine await.
Overnight stay in a homestay.

Day 3: Experience Village Life in Gaunap

Wake to birdsong and enjoy a slow morning in one of Kumaon's most charming villages. Walk to the village temple for beautiful views of the snowy Himalayan range — especially lovely in the early light, when the peaks catch the first gold of the day.
Spend the rest of the day as you choose: learn about farming from your hosts, interact with villagers, explore nearby forests, look for birds in the oak canopy, photograph stone houses and terraced fields, or simply sit with a book at the homestay and let the hills do the rest.
This is the day the trip earns its name — no distance to cover, no destination to reach, just presence. Overnight stay in a homestay.

After completing the walk, drive to the ancient temple complex of Jageshwar Dham, nestled amidst magnificent deodar forests. Home to over a hundred beautifully carved stone temples dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, this sacred site is one of Uttarakhand's most important spiritual destinations. Spend time exploring the peaceful temple complex before continuing to the charming village of Ganghet. Check into another delightful heritage stay and enjoy your final evening in the Kumaon hills.
